For some, to be the first person in your family to pursue higher education may appear challenging or seemingly unattainable. Having support and access to resources can be a great assist to overcome barriers.First-Generation College Celebration Day is one week away. SREB is excited to celebrate this day that helps raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity by advancing an asset-based, national narrative of these students’ experiences and outcomes. Each day, we will highlight how SREB supports first-generation college students through various programs and partnerships, beginning with the SREB Student Success Advisory Council. The council convened leaders from colleges and universities, state-level postsecondary agencies and state legislatures to help states increase postsecondary student success — particularly for students from low-income families or rural communities, for Black, Hispanic and Native American students, and for those who would be the first in their families to attend college.Read our latest report: https://bit.ly/3QksmnU Find out more at https://bit.ly/3FJW9Bz.#FirstGenerationCollegeCelebrationDay #EducationMatters #FirstGenStudents #StudentSuccess #SREBStudentSuccess

Every year, we hear about tremendous academic accomplishments of teenagers earning college degrees at a time when most others are simply graduating from high school. Yes, we should praise and honor these super students, but we should also ask ourselves, how many others could have achieved the same levels of education while they were teenagers? How many are being left behind because our system fails them? I believe there are thousands of children capable of doing more than tradition expects. We are proving it in Gary and Indianapolis, Indiana and in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our open enrollment charter schools empower and support teenagers wanting to do more than tradition expects. And they are proving that if given the support, they can do more and want to do more. We are not talking about a few students, either. We are talking about many students. Our students regularly earn associate degrees and some have pushed themselves to earn full bachelor’s degrees while in high school. We seek to make this the norm, not the exception. https://lnkd.in/gyqAyrvm

Seattle's Promise Program is a game-changer for our community's future, guaranteeing free college and playing a vital role in both our economic growth and community well-being. In today's competitive job market, a post-secondary degree is more crucial than ever for securing well-paying positions. When the program was developed, it was forecasted that by 2020, an estimated 70% of jobs in Washington will require some level of post-secondary education. However, only 31% of high school students in our state currently earn a post-secondary credential by the age of 26.This program not only addresses the growing demand for skilled professionals but also promotes equity by ensuring that everyone has equal access to quality education. As we look ahead, investing in free education will not only strengthen our workforce but also empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to our evolving economy.Let's champion Seattle's Promise Program as a beacon of opportunity, fostering a community where education is accessible to all, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future."

A coalition of higher education leaders will convene for a congressional briefing and student speaker panel on the state of Black learner enrollment in colleges and universities nationwide today, February 6, 2024.Members of the Level Up and Get Real panel (Level Up) will brief lawmakers on the Hill about the panel’s work and the urgency of this moment to act in support of Black learner success in postsecondary education. The panel begins at noon Eastern and is hosted byAchieving the Dream, theEquity Avengersand theAssociation of Community College Trustees.Featured speakers during the event include:Dr. Keith Curry, Level Up Chair, Equity Avengers Co-founder and President/CEO of the Compton Community College DistrictJee Hang Lee, President of the Association of the Community College Trustees (ACCT), Level Up National Panel MemberDr. Karen Stout, President of Achieving the Dream, Level Up National Panel MemberDr. Frank Harris III, co-director of the Community College Equity Assessment Lab at San Diego State University (SDSU).Dr. Monica Parrish Trent, Ph.D., Chief Program and Network Officer of Achieving the DreamWith remarks by Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-4)Since 2011, Black student college enrollments have been declining steadily, particularly at community colleges, which have historically represented a critical access point for Black learners as relatively affordable, open-access institutions. The ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ health, safety and economic security has only accelerated these declines.Over the last 20 years, the nation has lost 300,000 Black learners from the community college system, with participation rates among Black students lower today than they were 20 years ago — a documented and drastic decline in access and enrollment long before the wide-reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. When looking across all sectors, roughly 600,000 Black learners have disappeared from American higher education, threatening both their personal economic success and the success of the communities they enrich.A recording of the briefing will be posted on the Equity Avengers site as soon as it is available. #LevelUp #

Just stumbled across a piece from my alma mater on the guidelines for executive education and non-degree offerings at Columbia University. It's fascinating to see how the University is expanding its reach and impact through these initiatives, fostering engagement with corporations and professionals while enhancing its reputation and network. Here's what caught my attention: - Collaboration between Columbia Schools and the University to launch new non-credit non-degree offerings- The effort to facilitate faculty participation in developing and delivering these offerings- Guidelines for reporting and compliance to maintain quality and ensure compliance with University policiesThe best academic institutions in the world seem to be doubling-down on non degree programs.

#UnapologeticLeadershipThoughts: The Public Confidence in Higher EducationWhile on social media the other day, I saw a meme with the caption: “Found A College Diploma at Goodwill.” This image has been on my mind lately as I continue to wonder how much confidence potential learners have in higher education and, particularly for me, #communitycollege education. A recent Gallup poll shows asharp declinein public confidence in higher education this year after years of diminishing trust. Before this year, the poll found that 57% (2015) and 48% (2018) of participants had confidence in higher education, but recent numbers show that trust has hit a low at only 36%. What does this mean for the future of higher education, and what further implications does this have for our most marginalized and underserved students? It means many of them will not enroll at our institutions, which is a problem for the communities we serve. At the same time, we, as institutional leaders, must figure out ways to regain confidence in academia’s value on an individual level. Without support on this level, we will never be able to restore that trust because these people are the parents of our prospective students, the voters in our local, regional and national elections, and the neighbors in our communities who talk to each other as cheerleaders or as naysayers. As a leader, I am not perfect, but I am fully committed to being an unapologetic leader when it comes to doing what is right for Compton College and its students. As I think about public confidence, I am reminded of the former “Compton Community College” when its accreditation was revoked in 2006, breaking the promise that all postsecondary institutions hold to be the hubs of their communities. The community no longer trusted that we would educate our future generations, and it took years for us to return from that. In some ways, I think we still feel the repercussions to this day.Read more at the link to see the strategies we put to work to earn back trust: https://lnkd.in/gQjvtfdM
